EC-2 Power Plant - One of The Most Spectacular Abandoned Building In Łódź
Do you remember The Simpsons and Homer’s workplace? Yes, that amazing power plant with the spectacular cooling towers. We’ve always wanted to see something like this live. If we had an abandoned power plant, we would take brilliant urbex photos, we are sure.We don’t mean Kelenföld Power Plant this time. It was an unforgettable urbex trip and we strongly recommend you to visit this object, but today we would like to visit something different. We are searching for an abandoned building with the cooling tower. Ok, let’s check our urbex map. Can we find a nuclear power plant near us? Chernobyl could be a nice destination, but during the COVID outbreak, we cannot visit Ukraine. Hopefully, we’ll do it next year, but today we are going to see the capital city of the Polish industry – Łódź.
Łódź is known for abandoned factories from the 19th century. We love to return there and explore places like Uniontex or Osser’s factory. The old, industrial architecture is astonishing. But so far, we have underestimated the more contemporary abandoned buildings. When we found EC-2 – the abandoned power plant in Łódź, we fell in love with its cooling tower and the control room. (Have you thought about the Kelenföld now? ) Ok, so join us on our trip to the EC-2.
Abandoned Power Plant In Poland Was Almost Destroyed
The power plant ceased operation in 2015 and was sold two years later. The new owner started the demolition of this beautiful building in February 2019. Fortunately, the lawyers stopped that horrible work one month later. We lost a part of the power plant, but the cooling towers and the control room survived luckily. You may ask how it happened that the historic building was almost demolished. So, the procedure of registering the EC2 power plant started in 2018, but unfortunately, official procedures in Poland take a long time. It was already March when the public administration employee had his last coffee and decided it was time to start his job. Yes, the EC2 was registered as the historical monuments in March 2019, so the demolition in February 2019 was theoretically legal. Fortunately, the demolitions weren’t working too briskly and didn’t destroy much until March.
Urbex Trip In Łódź - The Abandoned Power Plant Exploration
We saw this place during our other exploration in Osser’s factory. Through the window, we saw a huge cooling tower that we associate with Chernobyl. Actually, it was not an abandoned nuclear power plant, but still power plant. We found a lot of entrances to this property – open gates or hole in the fence. Getting to the turbine room was quite easy because there was no single wall after demolition. It was an astonishing abandoned place, just check it on the photos. From the turbine room, we got to the offices and we tried to find a control room. The founding control room was not a piece of cake. It’s connected with the turbine room, but the transition was not so obvious. We surrendered and went outside and we were searching for the destination of our dreams. Finally, we found a round small building hidden behind the turbine room. The impressions were amazing. A green control room with a skylight. Sounds like a Kelenfold again? Maybe there was no art deco roof, but it’s beautiful anyway. We loved this place so much.
We saved the best for last. The cooling tower was actually the reason for our trip. We didn’t expect to get inside but had a nice surprise. The inside of a cooling chimney, it was one of the best urbex locations. Blue walls with a beautiful circular outlet through which we could admire the blue sky are one of the unforgettable urbex memories.

We can say, that the EC-2 is the connection of the most popular urbex destination. Control room reminds us of Kelenföld . The cooling tower is maybe not Charleoi cooling tower, but it’s deeply remembered. And don’t forget about spectacular constructions in the turbine room, which give goosebumps to each industrial lover.
