For years, Otthon Áruház in Budapest stood like a sleeping giant in the middle of the city — closed, mysterious, and incredibly tempting for anyone passionate about urbex exploration. We first came across this former department store on one of our early trips to Hungary, and since then we made it a tradition to walk by the building every year. Each time, the grand façade looked even more faded, and the locked doors whispered stories from the past. Then, after seven long years, something magical happened: renovation began, and for the first time ever, the building opened to the public. Stepping inside felt surreal. Light poured through the vast atrium, touching balconies, staircases, and old architectural details that had been hidden for decades. It was as if the soul of the building finally exhaled. Standing there, we realized this wasn’t just a location — it was a journey of patience, nostalgia, and discovery.
